Down here in Central Virginia, our weather swings from freezing winter mornings to humid, 95-degree summer afternoons. That kind of climate makes timing your concrete work important.
Spring and fall are usually your best bets for flatwork or decorative pours around the Fan or up in Henrico. During these months, temperatures stay mostly moderate, giving the mix enough time to cure properly without baking in the sun or freezing overnight. If you are planning a new driveway or patio, aim for April through May or September through October. You will get better results and a stronger slab.
What Richmond Weather Does to Fresh Concrete
Extreme heat is a major problem for fresh concrete. When it is ninety degrees out with high humidity, the water in your mix evaporates way too fast. That leads to shrinkage cracks and a weak surface. RVA Classic Concrete has to use specific admixtures and move twice as fast to keep things workable.
On the flip side, winter brings its own set of headaches. If the temperature drops below freezing while your concrete is curing, the water inside expands as it turns to ice. That ruins the internal structure completely. We will not pour if a hard freeze is coming unless we are using heavy blankets and heated enclosures, which adds unnecessary cost to your project.
Protecting Your Investment All Year Round
Once your concrete is cured, you cannot just forget about it. Richmond red clay soil shifts constantly as it gets wet and dries out, putting stress on slabs. Here is what you should do to keep things solid:
- Seal your concrete every couple of years to block out moisture and deicing salts.
- Keep your gutters clean so water does not pool right next to your new patio or walkway.
- Wash off organic debris like wet leaves in the fall so they do not stain the surface.
